A Couple of Transit Geeks Take on South America

About

A little about ourselves…

We are Tamara and Mikey, two California natives with a bad case of wanderlust.

We have both always been drawn towards travel, and more recently drawn towards transit. Although we grew up in very different families with very different ideas of what a vacation meant, we both relish the idea of a good adventure and love to explore new places and new experiences. After college we started our professional careers working as transportation engineers in San Francisco – a city that certainly does not favor the automobile. Thus we looked to alternative transportation – biking, walking, busing, ferrying, cable car-ing – and loved it. Something about not having to drive in city traffic or having to circle the block 20 times to find a parking space really struck a chord with us. And the people you end up meeting (whether you intend to or not) on mass transit are, well interesting to say the least, like this guy getting his balloon animal stuck in a packed Muni vehicle.

So here we are preparing to embark on a yearlong epic trek around South America that will include 50 hour bus rides, amazon boat tours, hiking the ancient Inca Trail, skiing in the Andes, cruising to Antarctica, and spending most of the money that we have worked so hard to save.

About Tamara

lima-bus

Tamara was born in Santiago, Chile to an Italian-American mother and Portuguese father. After living in South America for only the first two years of her life, Tamara spent her childhood growing  up in Modesto, CA. She left her high school friends (MoHi fo’ life!) to attend college at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo and study Civil Engineering. After meeting Mikey in college and instantly falling in crazy love with his super charm, they moved up to the San Francisco Bay Area together. Tamara loves cats, RIP Banana, and gets a really weird pleasure in helping others.

Tamara is our resident photographer, likes to organize, and is great at getting stuff done. She is never afraid to get her hands dirty and doesn’t mind breaking  a sweat – on the soccer field or the dance floor!

About Mikey

mikey-minibus

Mikey was born and raised in Ventura, CA along side his six brothers and sisters and faithful pup, Russell. Mikey graduated with his BS degree in Civil Engineering from Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo (sound familiar?) and he also got a minor in Spanish just for kicks. After school Mikey moved up to San Francisco to work as a Transportation Engineer. He enjoys riding BART to work, cooking dinner for Tam, and strappin’ on his helmet to go for a bike ride.

Mikey likes to live in the moment and tends to get distracted easily (#fidgety). He tells great stories and is always willing to do something silly on a whim. When he’s not scouring the interwebs for discounted flights, he can be found on the field hockey pitch with his hometown Eagles. Caw!
